Quotes by Gajanan Maharaj (Shegaon)
Sant Chokhamela (14th century) was a prominent saint and poet of the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. Born into the Mahar caste, which was considered untouchable, Chokhamela’s life and work challenged the caste-based discrimination of his time. Despite facing social ostracism, he devoted himself to Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur and expressed his devotion through deeply moving Abhangas (devotional songs).
Chokhamela’s poetry reflects themes of equality, humanity, and unwavering faith in God. His works also highlight the pain of caste discrimination while emphasizing that true devotion transcends all societal barriers. His wife, Soyarabai, was also a saint and contributed to the Bhakti tradition.
