Quotes by Gajanan Maharaj (Shegaon)
Sant Chokhamela (14th century) was a prominent saint and poet of the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. Born into the Mahar caste, which was considered untouchable, Chokhamela’s life and work challenged the caste-based discrimination of his time. Despite facing social ostracism, he devoted himself to Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur and expressed his devotion through deeply moving Abhangas (devotional songs).
Chokhamela’s poetry reflects themes of equality, humanity, and unwavering faith in God. His works also highlight the pain of caste discrimination while emphasizing that true devotion transcends all societal barriers. His wife, Soyarabai, was also a saint and contributed to the Bhakti tradition.
I am an untouchable, but does devotion have caste?

O Vitthal, when will you embrace me and remove this stigma of untouchability?

The body is made of the same five elements; then why this discrimination?

I may stand far from the temple, but my heart is closer to God.

God does not see caste; He sees the purity of the heart.

I carry the burden of untouchability, but my soul dances in devotion to Vitthal.

O Lord, make my life a lamp that burns to guide others.

Your grace alone can wash away the dirt of ignorance and pride.

The world rejects me, but You, Vitthal, embrace my soul.
